I think MTM had some of the best lyrics (Little Things Give You Away, Hands Held High for example) that Chaz and Mike have written, and you get that on an exponentially higher level with ATS. Lyrical content is the first thing that jumps to my mind.
There's a new level of maturity, as most people are quick to point out, that really shows itself in these songs. However, this album took things to a weird level the song structure was there, but it's how they approached the songs that was different from previous LPs. Essentially, if you take all of the electronics and replaced them with traditional instruments, you'd get a very similar sounding album to that of their first two. Song structure, instrumental progression, and basic emotion is very similar to that of Meteoras. However, if you look specifically at the individual songs and not the leading up/from tracks to each one, you realize that they're probably most similar to those of Meteora.
